Geoff Powell, Group Scout Leader.
As part of the Scout Association's Centenary Celebrations and their own 70th birthday, the 5th Colwyn Bay (3rd Rhos on Sea) Scout Group, North Wales, hosted a grand reunion at their Church Road Headquarters for ex-members of the Group.
The first to arrive was Miss Barbara Heaton who was Cub mistress (today Cub Leaders) in 1948 followed by Mr + Mrs Dibble. At the time Mrs Dibble was known as Miss Shearing and ran the Cubs from 1941/2 and the 18 year old Ken Dibble ran the Scouts as Assistant Scoutmaster from 1941 to 1942 when he joined the RAF.
During the afternoon there was a constant stream of ex-members from various UK destinations and representing every era of the group's 70 years existence. The man who travelled the farthest was Mr Hans Winns from Belgium; Mr Winns was one of two Belgian boys and three Dutch boys, refugees from Wartime Europe who joined the Rhos Scout Group.
The event started with an exhibition of photographs depicting the Group's activities over the years, followed by a buffet for ex-members, then a pageant of 100 years of Scouting by today's Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Scouts followed by presentations to some of the young members and leaders by the Area Scout Commissioner, John Muston.
This was an amazing gathering of scouting experience and will be remembered by all those who participated.
During the next six months a book will be prepared listing and in the case of the ex-members, a brief outline of their contribution to the Group when a member.
For those ex-members who could not attend the reunion they can obtain a first edition of OUR HISTORY, 70 Years (1937-2007) 5th Colwyn Bay (3rd Rhos on Sea) Scout Group.
Copies can be ordered from George Reeves (01492 581096 ) at 7 Maes y Coed, Deganwy, Conwy, LL31 9NQ. The cost if £3.50 to cover printing and postage, plus a voluntary contribution to the Scout funds would be welcome.
Anybody wishing to renew their Scouting Promise will be warmly welcomed at a service to be held at the smallest chapel in the UK at St Trillo's Church, Rhos-on-Sea Promenade at 8am on Wednesday 1 st August, the anniversary of the 1st camp at Brownsea Island in 1907.

Be prepared - get recycling!
for
100yrs of Scouting in 2007 and Comic Relief
Companies and individuals in Conwy can make cash from their trash for 3rd Rhos-on-Sea Scouts and Comic Relief who have joined forces to celebrate the Scouting Centenary next year. The local Scout Group has launched an innovative new appeal which raises funds through the recycling of mobile phones, PDAs and printer cartridges. The Scouts Appeal is run by recycling experts Redeem Plc and will help 3rd Rhos-on-Sea Scouts make money from items normally thrown in the bin. The people of Conwy can show their support for the appeal by donating their old mobile and PDA handsets and used printer cartridges. The Scouts Appeal will give 3rd Rhos-on-Sea Scouts cash for each reusable item received on their behalf. Local businesses can also help the appeal by saving their used printer cartridges and phones. Taking part is easy and completely free as Scouts Appeal will arrange collection from their premises. Not only will recycling allow companies to raise funds for 3rd Rhos-on-Sea Scouts, it will also boost their green credentials. Supporting the Scouts Appeal has a positive impact on the environment as it diverts mobile phones, PDAs and printer cartridges from landfill. These items contain toxic substances which, if they are dumped, can leak into the surrounding soil and pollute the earth. Donating them means they can be reused or disposed of safely. To find out more and to sign up to help the appeal visit www.scoutsappeal.com or call 08451 30 20 10 quoting the Group's account number: 730953

This photograph was taken in 1937, the year of the formation of the 3rd Rhos-on-Sea Scout Group, today known as the 5th Colwyn Bay (3rd Rhos-on-Sea) Scout Group, who would like to hear from anyone in the picture who may still be in the area.
Assuming the boys in were approx. 12 to 14yr old in 1937, they would now be in their early 80s.
2007 will be a double celebration for this Scout group as it is the Centenary of the formation of Scouting in 1907 and the groups 70th Birthday.
The Group now meet in the Scout Hut, Church Road, Rhos-on-Sea, with 26 Beavers, 24 Cubs and 21 Scouts.
As well as the above individuals the Committee would like to hear from any ex-members from intervening years, or anyone in possession of photographs following visits overseas, camps or other Scouting activities associated with this Group.
Information can be forwarded to Mr George Reeves, Committee Member and the current Archivist on 01492 581096. or at Greystones 7/LL31 9NQ Or email Geoff Powell.
